Malawi has taken a major step towards strengthening its electricity supply following the commissioning of the country's first utility-scale 20MW/40MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Kanengo in Lilongwe.

Minister of Energy Dr. Jean Chifuniro Mathanga officially commissioned the USD 20.245 million project, which was developed by the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited and funded by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP).

The Battery Energy Storage System is expected to improve the stability, reliability and overall control of Malawi's national power grid, helping to ensure a more dependable electricity supply.
The Minister led the official switch-on ceremony at the Kanengo project site, describing the project as a significant milestone in the country's energy sector.
