Education expert Benedicto Kondowe has underscored the importance of maintaining quality standards in institutions of higher learning, saying strong quality assurance is essential to protecting the credibility of Malawi's education system.

His remarks follow the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE)'s decision to deregister Pentecostal Life University (PLU) for failing to meet the country's minimum standards for higher education.

Kondowe said quality assurance helps ensure that students graduate with qualifications that are recognized and respected, adding that regulatory action is intended to protect learners and uphold academic standards rather than punish institutions.

He explained that regulators normally give institutions opportunities to correct deficiencies before taking enforcement action, but persistent non-compliance may leave deregistration as the only option.

Meanwhile, NCHE has advised eligible PLU students to transfer to accredited institutions and has urged prospective students to verify the accreditation status of higher education institutions before enrolling.
